Australian Cattle Dog

The Australian Cattle Dog is also known as ‘Blue Heeler’, ‘Red Heeler’ and ‘Queensland Heeler’. As the name suggests, they originated in Australia and their main working role is to herd cattle. They are stocky little dogs with a very independent personality. They are exceptionally loyal to their owners and will need regular walks, but apart from that are very low maintenance pets. A great family pet.

The breed, originating in the 1830’s, is a composite of at least 4 other breeds including the Dingo, the Smithfield, the smooth-coat blue merle Collie and the Dalmatian.
The average lifespan is around 14-15 years, but can be as high as 20 years
Bitches will normally grow to around 44cm tall and weigh around 21-23kg in peak condition, whilst males will be a bit larger at around 50cm and weigh up to 27kgs.
These dogs are an ideal pet for a household that wants an active dog. It is also imperative that this dog gets mental stimulation or you may find your garden being dug up or washing being pulled from the line. Older or less active people may find this breed a bit of a handful.
