Basenji

The Basenji is an interesting little breed of dog which is also sometimes called the ‘African Barkless Dog’ or the ‘Voiceless Dog’. Its claim to fame is that it does not bark due to its unusual shaped voice-box. In my experience with the breed, I would say that some can still make quite a lot of noise – even though it may not be traditional barking. Some people describe the bark as more of a yodeling sound in this breed.

These little dogs can range from timid to playful, but they all need a firm master to curb the independent streak that is such a trait of the breed. They originated in central Africa as a hunting dog and are usually classified as a hound. Because of their inherent desire to hunt, it is important that prospective owners are willing to train their dog and have excellent fences to contain the dog in the yard. I have seen many of these dogs that have been hit by cars, as when they decide to follow a scent, they will stop for nothing - even cars!
The average lifespan is around 14 years, but they can live up to 16 or 17 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.
Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
