Basset Hound

Basset Hound, Basset Hound picture, Bassett hound

As the name suggests the Basset Hound is a “low set” hunting dog. It was originally bred to track scents and its short legs ensure that its nose is always close to the ground! Even today, these dogs will follow any interesting smells that they come across.

The dog breed originated in France and there is proof of its existence dating back to the late 1500’s. They were introduced to Great Britain in 1066 during the invasion by the Normans. The breed didn’t reach Australia until the late 1950’s.

They are lovely, placid, laid-back dogs that are fabulous with children. Their droopy eyes make them very endearing and they are generally friendly and good-natured to anyone that they meet.

The average lifespan is around 10 years, but they can live up to 12 or 13 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

The female of the breed usually grows to about 33cm and 19kgs in peak condition, whilst the male is a bit larger weighing in at 25kgs and measuring up to 38cms tall.

Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
