Bouvier des Flandres

The Bouvier des Flandres is a breed which originated in Belgium and Holland. The name literally translates to “Cattle Dog of Flanders”. It is rarely used as a working dog these days, but its working roots means that this breed needs regular exercise.

The temperament of this breed can be quite varied. I have met some that are very gregarious and will befriend anyone, whilst others have been “one owner dogs” that were completely loyal to a single person. With a loving family, this dog will form intensely strong bonds and will be a loyal and intelligent family pet.
In terms of maintenance, this breed has a “double coat” and so will need to be groomed on a weekly basis to ensure that the coat doesn’t become matted. Some owners choose to clip their dog during the warmer months. You will also need to be aware that whilst these dogs are moulting they will need to be groomed every day if you don’t want dog hair all over the house.
The average lifespan is around 12 years, but they can live for up to 14 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.
They usually grow to about 60-68 cm in height and weigh between 27 and 35 kgs in peak condition.
Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
