Dachshund

Dachshund, Sausage Dog, Dashund, Dashound

Smooth Coat Variety

The Dachshund is a confident and independent little breed. They are very loyal, but are happiest off doing their own thing when they know their owner is nearby. They like attention, and will potter around the house with you all day. This and the fact that they are a great indoor dog as they have an odourless coat, make them an ideal pet for older people, or for people that will be spending lots of time at home. They are fine with older children, but really tend to prefer adult company

The average lifespan is around 12 years, but they can live for up to 15 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 15-20 cm in height and weigh between 6 and 12 kgs in peak condition.

Wire-Haired Variety

The wire coat variety has a rough, weather-resistant coat which makes it a perfect little outside dog. They don’t need too much grooming and are happy to get on with their own thing. They were originally bred to chase rabbits and still love spending time outdoors. They are very cute with their little beards and bushy eyebrows and would make a great pet for most households.

Long-Haired Variety

The long haired version requires the most maintenance of the three varieties – purely as its coat will need grooming from time to time. Because of this, they are probably more suited to a mainly indoor lifestyle. These dogs are very good little guard dogs and will bark boldly and confidently at strangers who enter the house. They really get on with anyone though and love spending much time with their owners.
