Dalmatians

dalmatians, dalmashun, dalmation

These lovely dogs shot to fame with the release of the Disney production ‘101 Dalmatians’. In my experience, these dogs are lovely but can be a little bit silly and clumsy. They are very outgoing and friendly and are desperate to please their owners. They are great with children, and would be a great family pet.

Puppies are born completely white and begin to develop their characteristic spots at around 2 weeks of age. Most of these dogs have black spots on their white coat, however, some have “liver” coloured spots. They have a natural bond with horses and really enjoy being around anything equine.

Other feathers in this breed’s cap include trekking in the First and Second World Wars, droving cattle, working on fire engines, as well as roles as hunting dogs and gun dogs. If you want an active, intelligent dog that needs lots of walks and runs, this could be the perfect dog for you.

The average lifespan is around 12 years, but they can live for up to 15 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 56-60 cm in height and weigh between 32 and 40 kgs in peak condition.
