English Springer Spaniel

English Springer Spaniel, Springer Spaniels, Spaniel Dog Breed

The English Springer Spaniel is probably the largest of the spaniel family of dogs. They are adorable and have a particularly soft coat. They can be a little bit silly and unruly if not trained properly and will be into everything as puppies and young dogs. I wouldn’t recommend getting one of these dogs unless you can spend a good deal of time training it whilst it is young. I have 2 cousins with this breed and one is immaculately trained, whilst the other one is a wee bit of a handful. However they are gorgeous dogs that would suit any family and be great with children.

These are true sporting dogs and will need lots of regular exercise – preferably some of which off the lead. In my opinion, this breed is best suited to a single master, so not the best choice for a family with a number of children that will vie for the dog’s attention. The breed’s main role as a gun dog was to locate game such as partridges and quail, and they really enjoy working in this capacity. They also enjoy playing with other dogs or their owners whilst running around in the park. They make a great companion, and as long as you are able to walk this breed every day, they will be very happy indeed in a family home. Like other sporting breeds such as the Pointer, the Hungarian Vizsla, the Hungarian Vizsla, the German Shorthaired Pointer, the Irish Setter, and the Gordon Setter, these dogs enjoy frequent company with their master. They are not breeds for people who are going to be at work all day and want a dog that will be happy alone in the back yard.

The average lifespan is around 11 years, but they can live for up to 13 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 42-50 cm in height and weigh between 20 and 25 kgs in peak condition.

Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
