Kerry Blue Terrier

Kerry Blue Terrier, Terrier Dog Breed, kerryblue, Kerry Blue Dog

In true terrier style, the Kerry Blue Terrier dog is fearless and energetic. It is a great watch dog and will need regular exercise. Its blue-grey colour makes it a real head turner. It will need grooming and clipping to maintain the breed's traditional look.

They are highly intelligent and obedient dogs, and love to “play”, but it is important that these dogs know that their human is the boss, or they can become quite cantankerous. They generally get along well with other dogs, as long as they have been well socialized as a puppy. The puppies are born jet black and change colour over a number of colour transitions until they are around 18 months old.

The breed originated in the 18th Century in the mountains of the Kerry County in Ireland and is the national terrier of Ireland (also commonly known as the Irish Blue Terrier).

The average lifespan is around 12 years, but they can live for up to 15 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 44-50 cm in height and weigh between 15 and 18 kgs in peak condition.
