The King Charles Spaniel is an exceptionally placid little breed, but at the same time they have a strong independent streak and are very sure of themselves. They respond well to basic commands. Its name arises from the fact that King Charles II reportedly preferred the company of a toy spaniel to that of his courtiers. It is smaller than its Cavalier cousin.

They are probably best suited to an adult household, as they prefer adult company. They can be quite demanding of attention, so are not a great choice for people who won’t be at home for most of the day. If you are interested in a dog like this but have small children, I would recommend a cavvie.

These dogs are bred in 2 main colours:• Black and Tan (Predominantly black coat with tan markings on the eyebrows, cheeks, behind the elbows, on the inside of the legs and underneath the tail.)
• Tri-colour (A black and white coat with tan markings on the eyebrows, cheeks, behind the elbows, on the inside of the legs and underneath the tail.)

The average lifespan is around 11 years, but they can live for up to 15 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 25-30 cm in height and weigh between 4 and 7.5 kgs in peak condition.
