Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature Schnauzer, miniature dogs, miniature shnauzer, mini schnauzer, schnauzer dog breed

This Miniature Schnauzer is one of my all-time favourite miniature breeds. They are full of personality with their delightful little beards and come in 3 colours – ‘salt’n’pepper’, ‘black and silver’ and ‘black’. In order to maintain the traditional bearded look, these dogs will require regular clipping, but are still gorgeous without clipping. As tiny puppies, they are absolutely adorable and can easily be trained to have immaculate manners. Another trait of this breed is that they make great watch dogs. Whether you are an older person looking for companionship and security or a family looking for a loyal, low maintenance pet, the mini Schnauzer will not disappoint.

It is an ancient breed, with historical references to it dating back to as early as 1492. They were previously known as “wire-haired pinschers”, but the name was changed in 1879 in Hanover to the name of an exhibition’s winning dog-“Schnauzer”.

The breed comes in 3 size categories; Miniature (shown on this page), Standard and Giant. Both the Miniature and Giant versions are derivatives of the original Standard sized version.

The Miniature breed was originally bred as a rat and vermin hunter and really prefer to be treated like a big dog than a toy breed. They best suit a household that will be able to give them attention, but also let them do their own thing at times. They enjoy the company of other dogs, particularly other schnauzers, so if you are thinking about getting one of these dogs, it may even be worth getting two!

The average lifespan is around 15 years, but they can live for up to 18 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 31-36 cm in height and weigh between 5.5 and 7.5 kgs in peak condition.

Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
