Pekingese

Pekingese, Pekinese, Peke, Pekingese Dog Breed

As the name suggests, the Pekingese breed originated in China. It was in fact the ‘Royal Dog of China' and was considered to be sacred. When groomed traditionally they are a real head turner. They are affectionate and completely loyal. They will fiercely protect anything they perceive belongs to them. However I have seen a few of these dogs who were a little full of their own importance. It is important not to spoil these dogs as puppies and to invest time in training the dog to ensure it’s a lovely, well natured, lion-hearted adult dog.

Legend has it that when the British first entered Peking, they found Tzu-Hai, the Empress, dead in her palace. Her body was being guarded by 5 of these little dogs. They had been bred for centuries by eunuchs for Emperors and had never before been seen outside the walls of the Forbidden City.

The average lifespan is around 16 years, but they can live for up to 18 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 20-25 cm in height and weigh between 3 and 5 kgs in peak condition.

Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
