Poodle Dog Breed (Standard)

Poodle, Poodle Dog Breed, Standard Poodle, Dog, Dogs, Breed, Poodle Standard

The Standard Poodle Dog Breed makes an excellent family pet and they are great with small children. They are easy to train and have a friendly and lively personality and just love getting out and about to parade their fabulous hairdos.

The breed comes in three main size categories; Toy, Miniature and Standard (shown on this page).

Standard Poodle Dog Breed Pics

Poodles, as a breed, have been around for hundreds of years. Old pictures found in England, Germany, France and Italy all show the dogs with the traditional clip, which entails the dog’s hind quarters being left bare, except for leg bands and a pom pom on the tail.

The name of the breed is said to be derived from the German word “pudel” which translates to “to splash in water”

Poodles are an exceptionally intelligent dog, something that many people don’t realize due to the rather ‘over-the-top’ grooming that we sometimes see. The traditional clipping of Miniature Poodles was originally to help their movement through water, as historically they were water retrievers. I have met many of these dogs in my time and am yet to meet one that I don’t like.

The average lifespan is around 12 years, but they can live for up to 14 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They must be larger than 38 cm in height at the withers (shoulders) if you want to show this breed in the standard category and usually weigh between 25 and 35 kgs in peak condition.

Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
