Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Great Pyrenees, Chien Montagnes des Pyrenees

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a stunning white-coated giant that was originally bred to guard flocks of sheep on against bears and wolves. This instinct is now often displayed in the form of the dog protecting the family and especially the children. It is a gentle giant and a fantastic and stunning family dog.

In the United States, the breed is known as the “Great Pyrenees” and in France it is known as “Le Grand Chien de Montagnes des Pyrenees”. The name arises from the location that the dog originated, the Pyrenees Mountains, located between France and Spain. The breed has a unique self-assuredness and almost majestic quality about it. It comes as no surprise that it has royal heritage, with both Queen Victoria and Marie Antionette owning dogs of this breed. Today, the dogs can still be found guarding sheep, high in the mountains, just as they have done for centuries.

The average lifespan is around 11 years, but they can live for up to 12 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 65-70 cm in height and weigh between 45 and 55 kgs in peak condition.
