Saint Bernard

Saint Bernard, St Bernard, Beethoven Dog, Dog Breed

The Saint Bernard is a gentle giant that shot to fame in the movie ‘Beethoven’ in the early 90’s. After the movie sales of the breed went through the roof, only to be followed by many of the dogs ending up being re-homed or sent to the pound as the owners were not prepared for the commitment of owning a giant breed dog.

These dogs eat a lot of food and generally everything about them is bigger than your average dog. The breed was originally bred by Swiss monks and used as rescue dogs in the Swiss Alps. They will be a loyal friend for life and are a perfect pet in the right family, but I would suggest you really make sure you know what you’re in for before you fall in love with one of the adorable St Bernard puppies – they will get bigger… a lot bigger!

The average lifespan is around 8 years, but they can live for up to 9 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 65-90 cm in height and weigh between 55 and 90 kgs in peak condition.

Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
