Schipperke

Schipperke, Shipperke, schiperke, shiperke, dog breed

The Schipperke was originally bred to be a watchdog on the Barges in Belgium. This heritage means that the breed is a fearless and very territorial dog. It will bond strongly with its owners and this makes it a great pet for older people. I have seen some of these little dogs that are a little big for their boots though and, in my experience, they can become quite grumpy with strangers if they are not well trained and socialized.

The breed is also known as the “Little Black Devil”, the “Belgian Barge Dog” and the “Little Captain”. There are references to the breed in Belgium dating back over 500 years. Roles of the breed over the years have included watchdog and ratters on barges. Due to this heritage, they often enjoy the company of horses as they used to form bonds with the horses that towed the barges along the canals.

This breeds suits a household that will be able to give the dog a lot of attention. The breed, however, is often quite stand-offish with strangers. They will not be happy if they are left alone for long periods. They enjoy the company of other dogs if they are introduced whilst they are young, but older dogs that have not been socialized are more interested in spending time with humans than other dogs.

The average lifespan is around 13 years, but they can live for up to 15 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.

They usually grow to about 28-34 cm in height and weigh between 5.5 and 7.5 kgs in peak condition.

Sorry, there are no photos at this stage. If you have a great example of this breed please email me at dr.caroline@hotmail.co.uk and I will put it up on the site!
